This is not a security web site so why has this this alert been highlighted? The reason is that this potential scam concerns anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel and that would just about include everyone...even YOU.

A simple non medical device can save on blood pressure, anxiety and mental distress. Here is medicine of a different sort.

Just grab a refrigerator magnet on you way out to your next hotel stayover. To find out why read on.

HOTEL KEY CARDS

Question:
Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?

Answer:
1. Customer's name
2. Customer's partial home address
3. Hotel room number
4. Check-in date and out dates
5. Customer's credit card number and expiration date!

When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.
Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process.

But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!

The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.

For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip!

If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.

About Fridge Magnets

About Fridge Magnets

Unlike most conventional magnets that have distinct north and south poles, flat refrigerator magnets made from composite materials are often constructed with alternating north and south poles on the same surface of the plane; this can be felt by taking two similar (or identical) refrigerator magnets and sliding them against each other with the "magnetic" sides facing each other: the magnets will alternately repel and attract as they are moved a few millimeters. This construction gives twice the magnetism on one side and is thus more effective at keeping the large planar magnet uniformly stuck onto the steel refrigerator than a uniformly-polarized magnet would be. It is also responsible for making the front of the magnet (the picture side) nearly non-magnetic.

Phone key
Using NFC phone as room key

The Answer to the problem?

A Stockholm hotel is trialling Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, the latest experiment in the hunt for a way to stamp out hotel key cards.

Described as the world's first pilot of such technology, it allows guests to bypass the front desk at check-in and go straight to their room, which can be unlocked using a cell phone.

The "key" is sent when the guest checks in from their handset prior to arrival and

use a short-range radio signal to enable communication between the phone and the door lock.

To check out, guests simply swipe their cell phone at a special point in the hotel lobby and the key is cancelled, as it is if the mobile handset is lost or stolen.

Guests at the Clarion Hotel Stockholm in Sweden will be able to trial the service, which is created by Assa Abloy, for four months.
