1. Hysteria
For nervous and excitable subjects and the complaints of the hypochondria. Symptoms include great nervous excitability, exaltation, hysterical contractures, trembling, palpitation, sense of levitation, paroxysmal respiration, stitching pains, tension in the limbs, jerking, twitching, hysteria.
All these symptoms are aggravated during rest and over exertion but are ameliorated by gentle motion and moving about. Also all symptoms move about and wander from place to place like Puls.
The mental state is at such times is worse by night often ecstatic, hysterical, of extreme activity, tension and excitement with rapid changes in disposition and ideas passing from one subject to another.
The imagination is overactive with various images of animals, people and happenings. Moves to the edge of the bed to make room for some imaginary other person else. All mental symptoms are worse in the dark, come on during rest, while sitting and lying, and abate with walking about.

2. Anxiety, Stress & Tension
It has been said that
Valeriana is the Mother Teresa remedy for those suffering from Anxiety, stress & tension. The connection between mental anxiety (which covers irritability, poor concentration, paranoia, mild depression, loss of humour lack of direction etc) and various physical stress maladies is well documented of which stress sufferers are living proof. The body under stress sends out signals to this effect whether by headaches or diarrhea, or through cramps or loss of libido or sleeplessness or nervous twitches or spasms or comfort eating and drinking, or an increased intake of coffee or substance abuse etc etc

The physiological reactions to stress are as varied as the people who have them, but what is known is that Valeriana has the effect of nullifying stress so that the stress sufferer gets through a rough patch actually strengthened in mind and body, unlike with chemical tranquilizers.

Chemical research teams have long searched to find what makes Valeriana so effective. Their investigations show that the plant possesses various chemicals with opposing actions that lead to a balancing effect on the nervous system. One chemical has been found to suppress nervous activity, while another has been found to stimulate the central nervous system. The net effect of this is that the remedy can relax those that are hyperactive or alternatively stimulate those that are exhausted ie Valerian can go either way.

Beyond the foregoing research has also shown that valerian relaxes muscles in the digestive tract including those in the stomach, which classically clench up under stress and strain. Furthermore alkaloids found in valerian have a definite and marked ability to act as a hypotensive lowering the blood pressure and hypotension

3. Headache
Violent nervous headaches with tension and tightness of the scalp in the evening. Stupefying, stitching, tearing pains with sensation of great coldness in head. There may be (especially at night) flashes of light before eyes which take on a wild appearance. There can also be hissing and ringing in the ears. The face becomes red and hot with facial neuralgia worse from rest. All symptoms are worse during rest, in open air and draft but ameliorated by gentle motion.

4. Asthma
Nervous asthma particularly if it is with spasmodic and convulsive movement of the diaphragm and occurs upon going to sleep

5. Gastro Intestinal Complaints
Eructation with foul taste every bit as bad as the remedys natural odour of spoiled eggs. Nausea, faintness, body ice cold, distended abdomen, cutting colic pain in abdomen with cramps of a drawing digging nature in evening, after dinner and in bed. At the same time voracious hunger.

6. Infant Dyspepsia
Child vomits curdled milk in lumps as soon as it has been fed. Worse if mother has been angry. The stool is watery with greenish curds containing worms and blood. Prolapse of the anus from straining to pass urine.

7. Rheumatism
Drawing, jerking of limbs, and twitching of muscles during rest. There is an inability to move the limbs due to a feeling of heaviness
Darting, stitching, drawing pain in the muscles of the arms and shoulders. Darting, tearing, intense pain like an electrical shock, repeatedly through the humerus. Cramp in biceps, wrist and hands when writing.
Pain along the sciatic with tearing, drawing pain in thigh upward to hip and in the muscles of thighs Violent drawing, jerking pains in lower limbs during rest. Drawing in legs and Achilles when sitting. Tearing in the calf and ankle and heel muscles.especially when ascending stairs.  Drawing pain in tarsal joints when sitting. All these symptoms are aggravated by standing and when at rest but ameliorated with gentle walking.

8. Insomnia
One of the reasons tranquilisers are so popular is that they are an effective means for those who are too stressed out to sleep. As most people now realise, there are several stages of sleep all of which are essential for a sense of physical well being. The fifth and deepest sleep stage is known as REM or rapid eye movement sleep. During REM sleep the functions of the body are completely shut down (a natural form of paralysis) with the exception of brain
activity which becomes exceptionally active and intense. It is during this period of sleep that the brain is refreshed.
REM sleep is also called paradoxical sleep due to the contrast between the high brain activity and the immobility of other bodily functions.

Tranquillisers all act in a similar way by stimulating an amino acid called GABA which functions by inhibiting nerve transmission thereby calming the nervous system much like the effect of excess alcohol. Unfortunately GABA is non selective and it also sedates the brain thereby precluding REM sleep with the result that the brain cannot fully refresh itself. The net outcome is that on rising in the morning the subject is not fully refreshed, the mind may feel tired, slow and confused, difficulty may be experienced in concentrating, there may be a sensation of disconnection and floating the pulse is slow, there is a general hang over feeling (like that experienced from too much alcohol) in which zest, vitality and get up and go seems to be missing.

Valeriana has been clinically proven to make it easier for people to slip into sleep and to rest deeply without any after effects the next day. Unlike chemical sleeping pills Valeriana does not interfere with the normal sleep stages and is especially useful for neurasthenic subjects who cannot sleep before midnight.

9. Menstrual Complaints
Menses delayed, scanty, suppressed. The remedy is also suitable for the menopausal state. In all cases the modalities should fit of worse at night and at rest and better with movement. Typical mentals include sexual fatigue, anxiety, headache, neuralgia and depressed mood.

10.High Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is regulated by a highly complex system and fluctuates constantly according to our level of stress and physical activity.  A diagnosis of high blood pressure with no direct cause is often attributed to lifestyle habits such as poor eating, smoking and stress and is referred to as essential or primary hypertension.

Valariana is considered appropriate for individuals who exhibit a nervous, irritable, restless personality and who find their overall physical symptoms improve (such as dissipation of dizziness, which is a common symptom of high blood pressure) when they are active and tend to worsen in the early afternoon or late evening, and when resting or sitting still.
