Description

Focus
The Focus of Cuprum metallicum (Cupr) is low self esteem/ controller. The patient is not weak willed (as in Cars) but strong and there is more power and consequently more self confidence (unlike Cars). They try to control their life at every price to prove to they can make it in spite of their low esteem. This makes them inflexible, very respectful of rules, cautious, fastidious, fanatic, ambitious, persevering, dictatorial, hard worker, planning everything, good organiser and successful. Because they live their lives in such tight control they are unable to let go their emotions which results in mental and physical exhaustion, tension and overexertion.

Self Confidence & Self Esteem
Definition and Differentiation
Self confidence may be defined as a function based on a presumption into the future of what could result as a consequence of a certain action
Self esteem on the other hand is a function based on a self evaluation of factual events (not presumption) of the past (not in the future) in which the individual divides their perceived successes in life by their perceived failures. For self esteem to nurture, grow and develop in a positive direction the individual needs a greater preponderance of successful outcomes to lifes challenges than failures. Self-esteem is a basic human need. It makes an essential contribution to the life process. It is indispensable to normal and healthy self-development and has a value for survival.
In summary esteem is factual based on past events whilst confidence is hypothetical based on conjectures into the outcome of future events.

Causation
The causation of this condition is a great lack of approbation or constant disapproval, undermining of self- esteem, too high expectations from the parents, lack of opportunities to realise their abilities, to make a career. In many ways the causation is similar to Cars. What distinguishes it however is the nature of the response. In Cars we have torpor and inactivity whilst in Cupr there the purposeful strength of control in order to prove oneself
It may seem strange that the Cupr personality exhibits lack of self esteem whilst at the same time displays strength and a degree of self confidence. The low self esteem results from the constant disapproval and strong control exerted by others which because of their ever present nature become absorbed into the recipients vitality to the detriment of his self esteem. However the green shoots of strength of confidence are never exterminated (unlike Cars) and they continuously emerge within the individual urging him onwards to achieve.

Symptoms

  • Low self esteem
  • Strong determination to control oneself and thereby events as a means of proving worth and overcoming low confidence.
  • Mental and physical rigidity, serious, closed, responsible
  • As a result they are hard working, persevering, never give up, ambitious, will try to be the best, try to prove that they can make it, very active, never has time to rest or to relax; has many activities, very organized,. Plans the whole day, strong desire to finish the task at hand.
  • In turn such tight control can end with mental exhaustion, burn out, and great lassitude.
  • Fear of losing control, of insanity, of falling, of heart disease, of the dark; of water, of impending death, of being alone, of an accident, of riding in a car
  • Fear of failure
  • On the physical level there is always some form of cramp or tension: migraine, epilepsy, asthma, hypertension, angina pectoris, tension in the neck and shoulders and cramps in the muscles, especially the toes.

Case Histories
Cuprum metallicum
(Cupr)

Case 1:
A male child was first seen at three weeks for an inflammation of the right eye and a coryza for which Tetracycline had been prescribed. Following this he got eczema on the face with enormous itches in the skin folds. His mother during his pregnancy suffered toxicosis with the consequence that was born by vacuum extraction. The mother hardly saw the child during the first week she being so ill herself. At the age of three months he drank very greedily from the bottle and suffered a lot of eructations and vomiting which lasted for several hours after feeding. There was aggravation when lying down with a clear improvement from 5.30 pm to 9 am. After drinking the bottle he always wept. Up to thyree weeks of age he had a green stool with stony hard thick lumps which bothered him all day long. He did not want to lie on his abdomen and screamed when he did. He could not tolerate change, was very restless and started violently from noises. The eczema was aggravated by contact with water.

1st Prescription:  Sulphur 200K.

Results: No improvement

The eczema was treated with a cortisone ointment and some weekd later the first asthma attack started. At the age of five the situation was as follows: He uses Becotide 2 dd, Beconase spray and Echinaforce. He received antibiotics about 13 times a year for his asthmatic bronchitis. His nighttime cough, which was dry and sometimes of a barking quality, was continuous and could last for up to three hours. He continually lay down. However his morning cough on waking ameliorated after rising and it did when he was by the sea shore. Up to two and a half years of age he felt unhappy, was aggressive and struck other children as well as his parents. He was not able to handle stress and started coughing. He talked constantly (though he could be quiet on occasion) was very excitable and busy, perspired very easily, had a panic fear of dogs and was afraid of unusual and new things. He had a fear of failure and needed constant positive encouragement. He was very dominant and needed clear rules, he has to know exactly where he stands. He disliked everything that was warm but liked cold drinks and desired cheese and sweets.

2nd Prescription: Lyc 200C

Results: Initially he developed a fever and his aggressiveness worsened. He was impudent and had conflicts with everyone. Later the coughing improved but at four weeks he got a cold again and has a dyspnoea:

3rd Prescription: Lycopodium 200C, diluted, every hour.

Results: A good reaction but a relapse after two days with new symptoms appearing. He woke at 4 am with a barking cough which sometimes resulted in dyspnoea and vomiting. His behavior became very problematic. He hits out and could suddenly become aggressive. He intentionally hurt others people, pinching, scratching, striking, kicking. If other children were doing something that is not allowed he interferes. He rigidly maintains regulations and ensures others do the same. He dislikes change. In school psychological help was advised because of his aggressiveness and difficulty to express his emotions. What he had in mind had to happen. He was very tense and frustrated if something did not succeed. He demanded a lot from himself wanting to be always first. He was very conscientious and serious, but could laugh on occasions. He suffered anticipation anxiety and couldnt be told things beforehand otherwise he was completely beside himself. He was continuously talking and needed constant encouragement. Despite his loquacity he was emotionally reserved, did not like to be touched and never sats long on ones lap. He hides himself away. He is abnormally dominant toward everyone and quarrels about everything.

4th Prescription: Cupr 10M This is a beautiful description of a Cuprum child when one considerers his symptoms of emotionally instability, that he could fly off the handle, of sudden impulses to hurt and injure, to be morose, malicious and loquacious, of fixed ideas we have here a beautiful description of a Cuprum child.

Results: Reported six weeks later that the remedy "helped very well". He had become very quiet and nice, was happy and caressing for the first time, was sweeter. He was much less dominant and it was possible now to discuss things. He listened to remarks and accepted things. There was less anticipatory anxiety and he handled everything better. He could be with others again and no longer woke at 4 am. He sometimes still had a little cough and was bothered by constant nasal mucus and sniffles but the whistling respiration had disappeared.
After a further week all medication was stopped. However 3 months later there was a relapse.

5th Prescription: Cupr 10M

Results:  All round improvement.

Case 2:
A woman of 40 with enormous tension and anxiety due to a conflict with her daughter who left home as a result of which she was mentally irritable. She had chronic coryza for over 8 years accompanied with a frequent cough (smoked 20 cigarettes a day since she was aged 18) and had a constant bad salty taste in her mouth. She experienced pain in the sacral region, had a high lumbar back ache with a pain in her left shoulder for over three years. Additionally she had a tense tingling sensation in her fingertips and lower legs. She had a large appetite, distended stomach and a hard abdomen prior to menses.

At the time of case taking some symptoms had changed namely she now had a sweet taste in the mouth, lacked appetite and desired cold drinks. She remained very tense
and careful, restricted herself to keeping all the rules, never crossed a red traffic light; very anxious in a car, fearful of accidents, very conscientious; routine person, wanted to keep things as they were; hard worker always busy, wanted to finish everything, had to be ready at a set time and did everything according to a plan. Always persevering she was always on time; never left her job too early; feared her boss, did not dare to ask for a day off; serious; aversion to be at home alone and to cooked potatoes.

Has more the feeling "there is another day tomorrow", appetite much improve, very thirsty for cold water, better mood, can listen to music again and sleeps better, more relaxed; perspiration less, no flushes anymore, smoked much less. However she had a relapse 4 weeks later.

2nd Prescription: Cupr 10M

Results: A four week aggravation involving coryza, tingling fingers, menstrual pains, back and shoulder pains sweet taste, coughing. Therafter a general improvement.
