Inspiring Homeopathy
Universal Layer
of
Carcinosinum (15T)
(Cars (15T))

Background
For many years Carcinosinum had a special place in the practice of Dr Tinus Smits and he had long been in search of the true and deeper understanding of the remedy.

Until recently he thought that the Carcinosinum used all over the world was the same. However colleagues who attended his seminars were not able to obtain the same cures with Carcinosinum as he did. It took Dr Smits two years to find the explanation for this phenomenon which lay in the quality of their Carcinosinum it being significantly different to the one he used. They used a one-tumor-Carcinosinum, made from a mammary tumor of a single woman which could not be universal enough to resolve the whole Carcinosinum layer and certainly not capable of causing a shift to the next layer. A further investigation of different countries showed him that various Carcinosinums existed made out of 58 different tumors including the one tumor Carcinosinum.  In contrast the Nelson Carcinosinum (London) which Dr Smits used was made from 15 different carcinomas and included Carcinoma Adeno (stomach), Carcinoma Papillary (colon), Carcinoma Papillary (ovary), Carcinoma Papillary (uterus), Carcinoma (bowel), Carcinoma Co. (bowel), Carcinoma Co. (K) -(K is a composite of carcinomas supplied by Koch Light)- Carcinoma Scirrhus (mamma), Carcinoma Scirrhus (stomach), Carcinoma Squamous (pulm).

This meant that Homeopaths throughout the world used quite different Carcinosinum remedies which were not fully comparable with each other as a result of which it was clear that a one tumor Carcinosinum was very different from a 15 or 48 tumor Carcinosinum. To introduce more precision into reporting Dr Smits suggested a change in nomenclature methodology. He proposed that single tumor Carcinosinums be named after the tumor that was used, e.g. Carcinoma mamma, Carcinoma rectum whilst remedies made from multiple tumors be called Carcinosinum followed by the number of tumors used, e.g. Carcinosinum (15T) 30K. The combination of different tumors is important in his opinion because this marked it out as a universal remedy applicable over a very wide range. For similar reasons that is why he made Lac-m out of 10 different samples of mothers milk. Similarly Seb-c was manufactured from several origins of vernix.

Development
The problem with Carcinosinum remedies is that so many homeopaths added symptoms of which a certain number turned out at least in the experience of Dr Smits not to be reliable or relevant. For many years he verified all Carcinosinum symptoms with every prescription and it became clear to him which symptoms to focus on and which symptoms should be eradicated from the picture in order to have a more reliable and practical image on which to prescribe.

It was difficult, once a symptom was entered in the Materia Medica, to get rid of it even when it turns out to be based on an error. So he started to take out symptoms that were of no value to the overall picture of Carcinosinum and to add some others that seemed important to him. The fears of Carcinosinum are a good example. The most important fears of Carcinosinum are: FEAR of cancer; fear in a crowd; fear in narrow places; fear in high places; fear of spiders, mice, snakes; fear of failure in examinations; fear of failure; fear of thunderstorms.

Therefore he removed fear of dogs, fear of the dark, fear of frogs in order to create a clearer defining remedy essence. This didn't mean that a Carcinosium patient couldnt have fear of the dark or fear of dogs but rather that the true main essence of the remedy should be concentrated upon rather than being distracted with minor symptomology. When the essence of a remedy is unclear there is a tendency to collect every symptom that comes out of a proving or out of one or more clinical cases with the result that the total picture is more confused. In contradistinction where the true essence of a remedy is clearly understood it is possible to construct the whole remedy picture in accordance with this essence.

Introduction

The Essence of Carcinosinum
To discover the essence of Carcinosinum one havsto understand the basic problem of the cancer patient and what exactly a tumor is, because Carcinosinum is made from the materialisation of the cancer problem. The cancer patient has permitted cells that are not them to grow in their body without activating their defense mechanism sufficiently to destroy them. The tumor is a foreign entity that does not respect them and finally destroys them without respect of structures such as blood vessels, muscles, lymph nodes etc. It grows and destroys every structure and every barrier (border).

An allegorical picture of what happens on the physical level could be when a countrys borders are violated by an enemy army (the cancer) who cross their international border and establish themselves and occupy the country with impunity in the process totally vanquishing the defending forces (immune system) arraigned against them. Additionally the invaders send soldiers to other places in the occupied country (metastasis) to take over residual areas of resistance in the suburbs and outlying districts. The occupied country then calls upon the international community to come to its aid in order to help restore their sovereignty (surgery, radiation and chemotherapy). The outcome of such a violent confrontation greatly weakens the country and the outcome is far from certain.

On the cellular level the same process takes place. The membrane of the cell is unable to defend its integrity and as a consequence ingests toxins. These ingested poisons damage their normal functioning creating anarchy and estranging themselves from their own essence.

The Personality of Carcinosinum
The Carcinosinum personality has a tendency to

  • Let others violate their own space. They dont make sufficient space for themselves, but theirs space is invaded by others being too weak to throw them out.
  • Display symptoms of suppression in the form of reduced reactivity as a result of an impaired immune response. Such reduced reactivity suppression is exhibited by a total lack of any fever response no matter what the patient suffers from.
The creation of a fever condition(response) is natures defense mechanism par excellence in which a raised temperature is used as a defense mechanism to kill viruses and other invading forces. The repetitive use of vaccinations, antibiotics, corticosteroids and aspirin reduces the immune response which in turn lowers their immune reactivity and with it the ability to create fever conditions.
Thus the absence of fever conditions renders the patient vulnerable, especially in childhood, to severe illnesses and infections such as, pertussis, pneumonia, chronic inflammation, otitis, bronchitis, rhinitis, etc.
  • Place their strength outside themselves and to feel weak and vulnerable inside. That's also what happens when they finally get a tumor and they have to be operated on, radiated and treated with chemotherapy. They are helpless, desperate and completely dependent on his doctor.

Reactivity

The Key to Tumour Treatment
Fundamental to tumour treatment is the fact that tumours only arise following a failure to overcome an acute infectous illness. Essentially it is the failure of the immune system to that leads to the formation of a tumour. Such failure results from a lack of immune reactivity. Tumour treatment therefore involves increasing immune reactivity and a return of the patient to the infective stage.

From the above it follows that the infectious stage is a more reactive state (with fever) than the tumoural stage (without fever). In the infectious state our immune system is stronger than the infective organism or alternatively it can be fairly easily activated by a well-chosen homeopathic remedy. The immune regulatory system of the patient is thus organised in the infectious state to overcome the disease through a stimulatory reaction which:- elicites a high fever (to enhance the metabolism of the body), increases the white blood cell count, accelerates blood circulation, dilatates the vascular system in the affected area or all over the whole body, and reduces appetite ( ie so that the digestive system can concentrate its resources on the elimination of toxins through diarrhea, sweating, a running nose, skin eruptions and all other elimination mechanisms).

In total contradistinction the tumoural stage is characterisaed by an immune system which is weaker than the tumour (due to a deficiency of immune reactivity) and hence none of the stimulatory reactions are possible - a situation which results in the uncontested growth and development of the tumour. The tumoral stage is a low reactivity stage. There is no acute phase, no fever, no eruption, no accelerated or enhanced evacuation of toxins. There is no acute outbreak followed by a restoration of balance as in the infectious stage. There is just a chronic imbalance sometimes even without any visible or noticeable physical expression. Thus cancer can develop without any perceptible sign that something is wrong.

The Key to Patient Treatment
Sure, for the holistic doctor, there are already a lot of symptoms not only on the mental and emotional plane but also on the physical plane, which he can interpret as a precancerous stage. He is able to help his patient to return from this insidious tumoural stage to the infectious stage and help prevent the patient slipping down to chronic internal diseases such as coronary diseases, cancer, etc. Such preventive treatments however are still more the exception than the practice.

The majority of patients are however suddenly confronted with cancer and often wonder how this could have happened to them, because they were almost never ill, had no influenza, no fever, no major health problems for decades and believed to be in excellent health. It is as if cancer manifested suddenly in the body, but we know that tumors grow slowly for years, even decades before they attain sufficient volume and invasive power to become a major health problem. (Homeopaths also know how a suppressed immune reaction results in a condition in which no symptomology is evident and the patient therefore declares themself fully fit).

An important element in tumour cure is the self hope of the patient that their condition is not hopeless. It is a bad sign when tumour patients are so often robbed of any hope of cure. As we have seen their immune reactivity level is lowered still further

In view of the foregoing it is hard to accept that anyone who really understands the Carcinosinum mechanism still considers that fever is an enemy to be suppressed. For most people and doctors this is still common practice even today. Children often have sudden high fever for only one or two days, and this is in fact a sign of good reactivity. But when again and again such reactions are suppressed by antipyretics and antibiotics or in more serious illnesses with corticosteroids then slowly but surely the reactivity is broken down and there is a slide from the infectious disease stage to the tumoral.

Reactivity- Definition
Reactivity can be defined as the ability of a patient to maintain their mental emotional and physical integrity by an efficient system of protection against perturbing influences from outside.

On the mental level the patient needs to be equipped to reinforce themself regarding, their life, their surrounding world, (ie that life is meaningful). that they were born for a purpose, that what they are doing is good for themselves, for others and for the world (ie namely a positive outlook).

On the emotional level they need joy, a feeling of love toward themselves and other people, to nature, to the earth and the universe. They need the capability to express their emotions even those that are commonly labeled as negative: anger, grief, irritability, for example.

On the physical level they need a good immune system, capable of cleansing his body of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc. Surely the best reaction of our organism to activate our immune system when our equilibrium is in danger is fever.

Thus reactivity is an important quality not only of our physical but also of our mental and emotional body. If a person has a tendency to let be suppressed himself by others, then the immune system does the same thing on the physical level. In the USA they found out that the immune system of optimistic people was about 60% stronger than that of pessimists. Therefore it is of great importance that cancer patients believe in their cure, that they feel stronger than their tumour(s) and that they go for it.

An essential part of tumour treatment is the patient's self belief that their condition is curable.

To repeat. IIt is a bad sign when tumour patients are so often robbed of any hope of cure. As prevoiusly mentioned their immune reactivity level is lowered still further.

How
Homeopathic Treatment Works
The first noticeable response for a Carcinosinum pateint is that their self confidence grows and that they start to listen more to their own needs and to defend himself better. They fortify their borders and get into a process of more awareness of their "true self".as well as their "untrue self", they no longer allow poisonous energy from outside to settle within his borders. They take more care of themselves, being attentive to their own needs and desires.

There takes palce a process of cleaning out at all levels, poisonous relationships are broken off or corrected, a consciousness of being someone that deserves respect and love blooms gradually, and a marked influenza or inflammation with high fever for the first time in twenty years cleans the poison from his body. All this means that immune reactivity is increasing.

Description

Focus
The focus of Carcinosinum (15T) or (Carc) (15T)) is a very low self esteem and a fundamental lack of self confidence combined with consequential weak defenses. In cases of low self esteem the individual feels an overall sense of failure, weakness and vulnerability.

Self Esteeem & Delf Confidence
Definition and Differentiation
Self esteem can be defined as a function obtained from self evaluation of factual events of the past in which the individual divides their perceived successes in life by their perceived failures. For self esteem to nurture, grow and develop in a positive direction the individual needs a successful outcome to lifes challenges. Self-esteem is a basic human need. It makes an essential contribution to the life process. It is indispensable to normal and healthy self-development and has a value for survival.

Self confidence on the other hand is a function based on a presumption (not a fact) extending into the future (not the past) of what could result as a consequence of a certain action.

Esteem is factual whilst confidence is hypothetical.

Causation
Undoubtedly the problem of low self esteem stems back to childhood. If the child is never praised when they have done well or punished too severely when they have done something wrong or given the impression that whatever they do is never good enough the child will feel incapable of fulfilling their father's/ family's  expectations and feels too weak to do anything. The situation of over demanding parents who place too many responsibilities/ expectations upon the child is especially damaging causing them to be overcome by the enormity of the task before them resulting as a consequence again in a sense of weakness and inability.  Furthermore a child can be born with a fundamental lack of self esteem (genetic predisposition) a condition which, given the above scenario, can only further exacerbate and undermine their self esteem.

Consequential Action
As a result of loss of self esteem the patient becomes a master in the avoidance of disapproval. To avoid their father's/family's disapproval the child (or adult for that matter) adopts any or combination of the following avoidance techniques
.

  • Hard work and performing at a high level to earn the praise and esteem of everybody
  • Over industriousness or over fastidiousness in an attempt to avoid mistakes and make sure nothing goes wrong.
(However the fastidiousness contrasts sharply when they are on their own without any outside pressure at which time they relax and can be untidy, disorganised, unkempt etc)
  • Avoidance of situations which can lead to reprimand (eg being good, well behaved, punctual, pleasing other people, never saying "no", accepting what is given without question, doing whatever is asked, never fighting or quarreling)
  • A yielding attitude to others who violate their own space. They don't make sufficient room for themselves and are too weak to claim their territory allowing their space to be invaded by others.
  • As a result of all the adaptation, submission and yielding there can be a deep residual anger within them.
  • A tendency of escapism from this demanding, critical and unfriendly world by entering a world of fantasy, dreams and harmony which is attained by reading for hours, being in nature, playing with animals, being transported by music and dancing,
  • Travel and being always on the move is another form of escapism.
  • Being a control person is stillo a further way of escaping disapprobation. By becoming very persevering, extremely well organized, planning everything, leaving nothing to chance no opportunity is left for criticism. This attitude reflects more the Cuprum metallicum (Cupr) picture which is why in so many cases Cupr+Cars are administered together.

WHAT CARCINOSINUM (15T) PATIENTS
TELL US BEFORE THE TREATMENT
If we have understood well (Carc (15T)) is all about how patients express themselves. The following are careful notations of (Casc (15T)) patients descriptions.

  • I am not allowed to fail, to make mistakes; everything has to be beyond reproach
  • I didn't get praise, rather my father used to tell me I was not capable of doing this or that;
  • I let myself be suppressed easily; there is still a lot of suppressed anger in me
  • I feel less worthy than other people, I am the black sheep; my father criticized my appearance
  • I cannot say no, I accept everything otherwise I feel guilty; I always avoid conflicts
  • I easily agree with everything and everybody, I cannot stand up for myself
  • I never suffer from fevers

WHAT CARCINOSINUM (15T) PATIENTS
TELL US AFTER THE TREATMENT

  • I feel I am someone; I dont feel of less value than other people any more; I am more confident.
  • I can take time for myself without feeling guilty.
  • I can help others' problems without taking them on my shoulders; I feel more clearly what is mine and what is theirs.
  • I can more easily say no and defend my own space; I don't feel guilty any more when I take time and care for myself.
  • I allow myself to be angry when anybody shows me a lack of respect
  • I express now what I think and what I feel; I do my best and then it is okay, it doesnt have to be perfect.
  • I now do what I want to do myself.
  • I keep at a distance from my father, I also have my own life.
  • I set boundaries for my children and satisfy my own needs.

Case Histories
Carcinosinum (15T)
(Cars (15T))

Case 1
The following case of a 62 year old man is a clear example of how this state can eventually result in cancer.  He arrived in rather a bad state, emaciated with a look of death in his eyes. Investigations in hospital revealed cancer of the colon with metastasis (ingrowing hydronephroses) in the right ureter. He was operated on and the right colon, sigmoid, jejunum, right kidney and gallbladder were removed. His life expectation was only some months and the surgeon didnt take pains to close the wound properly. The patient refused palliative chemotherapy and immediately started homeopathic and orthomolecular treatment. The most important thing now was to understand why he got cancer.

He was the eldest of three children, a dreamer with an enormous tendency to fantasy and with a certain paranormal gift. He was left handed and already at nursery and primary school he was forced to write with his right hand. The teacher encouraged him to do so by caning him on his fingers and buttocks. (He says that he still has the mark on his buttocks). He doesnt feel accepted by his family because he is so different. The Second World War broke out when he was six and he remembers clearly how a German solder broke his toy saxophone when he was serenading a German column of soldiers marching into town.

At ten he was sent to a boarding-school, where he was happy because he was accepted as a person and could indulge his painting abilities. His father was a world-famous artist and he knew him as a good and incorruptible man, open to everything that is good and worthwhile. Later however there were problems with his father when he starteds his own career as a painter in finding his own identity and not being just the son of the famous.

He grew up in a very severe dogmatic family under the strong influence of his grandparents. His father was mostly being busy or absent and his mother ran a shop. He received a lot of disapproval in his early childhood and his self-confidencewais below zero. Later he worked as a teacher in painting and drawing in a secondary school and married at thirty. His hobbies were drawing, music, theater, reading and nature. He had a phobia of water, some fear of high places and tremendously enjoyed lightning and storms.

He was always on time and inwardly angry when other people were late. His work had to be perfect (100%, but otherwise he was rather untidy. His marriage was catastrophic.
"I gave up everything for her. All my activities, all my personal ambitions and pleasures such as the theater, music, painting. I painted at school, telling my wife I had to stay longer because of a teachers' meeting. I felt deeply unhappy, I sacrificed myself because I had committed myself with her and I wanted to stick to my word. I loved her and accepted everything also because of the children. I am not able to fight and only feel an enormous anger inside. She always wanted to change me, and even my own children don't accept me as I am. When she left me after 22 years I felt broken, as I could never have done that, but later I felt a sense of liberation and was happy with it"

This strong feeling of adapting to what he once promised and to never give up brings us to another aspect of his character. He was very organised, planed everything, wanted to finish things the same day and followed rules conscientiously (when meaningful). He was angry when other people disobeyed traffic rules and he could be very angry in his heart about injustice. He said: "The greatest injustice is that I am never accepted." He wais very persevering: when he wanted to achieve something he was sure to attain.

All this indicated clearly his Cuprum side and therefore the homeopathic remedy he needs is Carc cum Cuprum (CCC). Especially as there was a lot of cancer in the family. His father died at age 49 from cancer, all his uncles and aunts from both sides got cancer and he also has a lot of cousins and nieces with cancer. His mother died at age 87 from "old age".

A homoeopathic remedy alone will probably not be sufficient to cure this patient. The patient has to be convinced that it is worthwhile to go for it, even if it is only for prolongation of life with improved life style. Any positive attitude is valuable and beneficial. This is not false hope as so often said. This is giving oneself as much of a chance as one can get. Cure is only possible if you believe in it, if you feel stronger than your cancer. Therefore the support by the doctor is important.

Other measures are also important to sustain the body in its effort to throw the cancer out. The treatment of free radicals is important with vitamin. C, E, Selenium and bioflavonoids as is the restoration of the copper and zinc equilibrium.  Other important issues include the harmonisation of the home, organic food with a good quantity of vegetables and fruit and little or no meat, sufficient rest, natural clothes and connection with the earth by wearing shoes with leather soles to minimize static electricity. Further and especially in his case good bowel movement is important. Finally Shark cartilage can assist in the prevention of tumour vascularisation. I gave this in 4C because not only is good shark cartilage very expensive but additionally I believe the potentised form can  transmit the quality of the shark itself (ie its aggressive characteristic and ability to defend itself). The killing of millions of sharks every year for their by products was also an important aspect which urged me to look for another solution. I have however been doing this only for quite a short time and cannot say much about the results. The first two persons who were blood tested after taking this remedy for one month showed very active white blood cells. So the first results seem very encouraging.

Prescription: CCC LM6 every day until he was judged sufficiently well enough to take CCC 30K twice a week.

Results: Five months after his operation the patient is quite well. He feels in good condition, his appetite has returned and his weight has increased approx 1Kg/wk. He has no pain, feels happy and has started painting again.

Case 2
A 53 year old lady with osteoporosis as her main complaint said about herself that she was not persevering person and that she was never was able to stand up for herself. She was the third of five children born during World War 2 and brought up by nurses as her parents ran a confectioners shop. She had to work all the time even as a child as  a result of which she wanted to run away and play. In order to get the attention she required she found a girl friend  who unfortunately died when the patient was just 20. She then sought consolation with a married man for four years where she was caressed for the first time in her life. But it was a difficult relationship and finally she got overwrought and she was treated by a psychiatrist .

The following is part of her own account. "Even now my self-confidence is zero" she says. "In my mothers eyes everybody was good, all other children were clever, but I was stupid. My sister tried hard to be the best, but I didnt do anything, and that created me a lot of trouble with my mother. She was very dictatorial and I fought with her until her death. I still feel angry with her. My father was a nice man, but he never intervened; I never knew him well. I have felt nervous all my life. I have no attachments. My body is as if I have a phobia for it. I have a lot of fears; of high places, of narrow places, of crowd, of cancer, a tremendous fear of spiders and thunderstorms. (I feel nervous before them.) My body is full of static electricity and I walk almost always bare feet. I love to read and do puzzles. My mother had rheumatism, my father died from a stroke. My mothers father, her brother and my grandfathers sister on her side died of cancer. I only eat in the evening and dislike bread and farinaceous food (this is the expression of her Saccharum layer). I wake up frequently at 2.30 a.m. and am sleepless after that."

Prescription: Carc 30K, once a week.

Results: She gradually she feels better. In the beginning she had cystitis, but she was less tense, felt more confident, and drove for the first time in four years on the highway.

Five months later she said: "I have become someone else. I feel the need for spiritual books and I feel connected with the cosmos, which gives me a feeling of happiness. I had completely lost my belief n God before, but now I feel his existence again. My mother was a fanatic catholic and sent me to church every day. After a dose of Carcinosinum I feel relaxed and content and dont have any urge to perform".

Prescription: Cars 200C

Results:  She continues "I feel much more the need to work and to be active. Now again after two months I feel that I have to do something for all these new things, all this love, so I decided to stop smoking, which I never was able to do during my whole life. I made a promise to myself. I sucked my thumb until I started to smoke at age seventeen. But life now seems empty to me, I am missing something."

Here we see the shift to the Saccharum layer: she needed so much attention in her childhood and she compensated it with sucking and later on with smoking cigarettes. This was her only satisfaction and consolation. In this case the mother played the role of the disapproving father and the father himself added to it by his absence and non involvement. However at this point I did not change her remedy because she still felt the benefit of Cars and continuing will help the Saccharum picture to develop more clearly.

Cancer Cell Division
Cancer cells do not stop reproducing, they go on without stopping, forming clumps and affecting normal body function. They do not obey signals from other cells nor do they specialise but remain immature.

However, cancer cells reproduce rapidly and may elude detection by disguising themselves in a way the immune system fails to recognise.
