Saint John's Wort
Hypericum perforatum

Hypericum is being taken by millions of people around the world today and so I wanted to be sure to include it on "NATURALLY...YOU!", Homeopathic Solutions so that people who are taking it can refer to this document to see what the symptoms of Saint John's Wort are from homeopathic provings.

The homeopathic references for this compilation of Hypericum symptoms are at the bottom of this page as is the discussion and conclusion. Here follows the mental and somatic symptoms which can be produced from Hypericum (Hypericum is the name by which it is listed in homeopathic materia medicas.):

Scroll right for Remedy Headers - Hypericum  >>>>

Mental Symptoms
On waking from sleep at 4:00 AM, feels as if she is not lying on the bed (when she is).
Feels as if lifted high into the air; or anxiety lest he should fall from a height/fear of falling.
Mistakes in writing; omits letters, puts left for right and vice versa; dyslexia.
Forgets what she wanted to say.
Great nervous depression following wounds.
Can't think; brain tired out; neurasthenia.
Ailments from fright, shock or hypnotism.
Talks wildly at night after 4:00 AM while asleep with apprehension and gasping for breath.
Mental excitement as after drinking tea.
Weakness of memory.
Confusion of the mind.

Excitement in the evening.
Startled, frightened easily.
Weeping in the evening.
Unconsciousness after exertion (fainting).

Bodily Symptoms
Head feels longer or larger. Feels as if elongated to a point. Feels as if touched by an icy cold hand. Peculiar awareness of the brain organ; feels as if compressed, alive or loose. Heaviness and crawling in the brain. Scalp sweaty, aggravated in the morning after sleep, the rest of the body can be burning hot. Throbbing in the vertex aggravated in a close room. Falling out of the hair. Lies back and jerks head backwards.
Often indicated after injuries to the brain, spinal chord and nerves in general (when the symptoms match the patient's condition, of course).

[N.B.: Homeopathic remedies are best never given taken on what is called keynote prescribing which means, for example, that you have a nerve injury situation and so you automatically give Hypericum. This is not homeopathy, but routinism and is very inaccurate prescribing.
The totality of the symptoms of the person must be accessed first before deciding on the remedy needed. Hypericum is not the only remedy frequently indicated after nerve injuries. In the Kunzli Repertorium Generale under: generalities, injuries, nerves, very painful there is listed Hypericum as well as Phosphorus and Xanthoxylum (Prickly Ash). As always, take the entire case and employ the rules of Classical Homeopathy. Another remedy may be more appropriate than these.]

Sticking pain through R. eye. Sty on L. lower lid.
Sticking pain through R. ear in the evening. Sensitiveness of hearing during the menses.
Eruptions on R. ear.
Facial neuralgia and toothache with sadness. Eczema of the face and hands. Face hot and bloated. Right side of face aches. Tension in the cheeks. Yellowish green scabs with cracking and moisture. Eruptions around the mouth.
Dryness of lips and mouth. Burning heat in the mouth with thirst. Insipid or bloody taste.
Continually picking at itching sore inside the nose. Sore bridge on rising. Dryness.
Acute sense of smell.
Tongue: white coating at the base, clean at the tip. Thirst with a feeling of heat in the mouth. Throat feels as if there were a worm moving in it. A feeling of heat rising in the esophagus after a fright or with an anxious feeling. Belches while drinking water.
Feeling of a lump in the stomach.

(N.B.: This reminds me of a case of Hypericum poisoning that I attended. She had the restlessness, anxiety and fear of Arsenicum album with the attacks which centered around a lump feeling in the stomach attended with horrible nausea and an inability to either move it up or down. She could neither vomit nor move her bowels. She needed Arsenicum album for a few weeks to get rid of these symptoms. These symptoms came on acutely about two weeks after discontinuing taking a high potency, fortified Hypericum herbal preparation. This case was an excellent example of how poisoning symptoms will not generally rear its head, I've found, until a couple of weeks after discontinuing a remedy which has been taken daily, every other or third day or weekly for a long period of time. It seems that while the remedy is being taken repeatedly it can both poison and antidote the poisoning at the same time. This is why you have the acute poisoning ailments coming on a week or two after discontinuing the remedy. The vital force is no longer being both poisoned and antidoted daily by stimulation from the remedy and it therefore goes through the healing process of trying to eliminate the effects of the drug through an acute cleansing reaction. It is therefore better, I think, if one suspects that one is proving a remedy by accident that has been taken for a long time to gradually reduce the strength and frequency of the dose until it is slowly eliminated. This may eliminate the sudden and violent episodes that this woman suffered through. As always, consult with your health care practitioner before making any changes to your health regimen.)

Stomach, continued: nausea, vomiting, bubbling sensation at the navel, desire for wine, warm drinks and pickles (the traditional place homeopaths list food desires and aversions is with the stomach symptoms). Tympanitic distention of the abdomen > (ameliorated) after a stool.
Heart feels as if it will drop down. Palpitations.
Asthma aggravated by foggy weather, ameliorated after profuse expectoration. Spells of short, barking cough. Anxiety in chest in forenoon with shortness of breath. Stitching pains in the chest.
Rectum feels dry. Hemorrhoids with tenderness, pain and bleeding with shooting pains, usually upwards, person is in agony. Summer diarrhea with skin eruptions. Loose, bilious yellow stools. Unusual severe and frequent urging to stool.
Desire to urinate with violent tearing pains in the genitals. Swelling and hardness of the female urethra with burning soreness and sensitivity.
Menses too late; headache, sickening pain in the abdomen, sensitive to noises. As if a tight bandage around the uterus. Scirrhus cancer of breasts after injury.

[Conium maculatum is another remedy for breast tumors after injury. Also Bellis perennis. Bellis for soft tumors after injuries and Conium for hard ones. There are others, consult the repertory under: chest, tumors, mammae. Or see the list on the Breast Cancer Remedies Page.]

Back: pain in the nape of the neck; pressure over sacrum; jerking and twitching of back muscles. Consequences of spinal concussion. Pains and lameness after injury.

Lancinating pains in the upper and lower limbs; upwardly shooting pains, they shoot up the limb towards the trunk of the body. Pains in the fingers and toes. Crawling in hands and feet. Cramps in calves. Joints feel bruised. Rheumatism in the small joints and the knees. Darting pains in the shoulders. Pressure along ulnar side of arm. Jerking and twitching of muscles in general. Pains with crawlings and numbness. Nerve pains in general. Limbs feel detached from the body. Hands and feet seem "furry" or the bones in them ache. Aching in left sciatic nerve after prolonged sitting. Lacerated, injured or inflamed nerves; mashed fingers and toes, etc. The wounds are much more painful than they would seem from their appearance.

Very sensitive to touch, whereas wounds requiring Ledum are generally not so.
Wounds needing Arnica generally are more bruised and contused than lacerated and the person is very fearful of anyone coming near the injury and typically refuse treatment and want to be left alone like Bryonia.

Compound fractures. Injury to or reflex symptoms from brain or spinal chord. Pains are intolerably violent, shooting, lancinating along nerves towards the trunk; also down the sides of the head or chest; in epigastrium; interscapular spine; fingertips, etc. with crawling and numbness. Neuritis as a result of injury. Neuralgia of amputee's stump. Shuddering, spasms, tetanus. Spasms are produced after every injury, even just running into a wall, for example.

Shuddering over the whole body during fever with desire to urinate. Heat with delirium, wild, staring look; hot head, red, bloated face, sweating scalp, burning skin, much oppression of the chest and anguish.
Laborious dreams; of activities, travel; vivid, distressing dreams. Wakes at 4 AM with sense of levitation. Weary on waking, > noon.

Eczema, eruptions seem to be under the skin, intensely itching; pain in old scars; shingles (herpes zoster); skin is rough, as if full of small knots. Smarting eruption like nettle rash on the hands.

Hypericum has the greatest affinity for the nerves, especially the spinal nerves affecting the coccyx, the interscapular nerves and the meninges of the brain. It has a secondary affinity for the joints.

[N.B.: The affinity refers to the systems and tissues that the remedy has healing power to primarily influence. So, for example, if if a person has an ailment that primarily involves the liver, then Hypericum would not likely do much for that person, unless there was a specific and unique reason found by the homeopath to lead him or her to this remedy. There are no automatic remedies in Classical Homeopathy, the entire case must always be assessed and remedy selection must always be individualized.]

Consequences of shock or fright. Prevents lockjaw from wounds in the sole, fingers or palm. Convulsions from blows or concussions. After a fall the slightest motion of arm or neck makes the person cry out. Flesh sore, feels bruised all over. Noted for its ability to heal injuries to parts rich in sentient nerves, especially fingers, toes and matrices of nails. Mechanical injuries, wounds from nails, splinters, in the feet, needles under the nails, from squeezing injuries, hammering of the toes and fingers, especially the tips; when the nerves have been lacerated, wounded and torn with excruciating pains. Lacerations in general when the excruciating pains indicates severe nerve damage. Next after the nervous tissue affinity, the joints are affected. Sensations as if lifted high up into the air.

Aggravated or worse from: cold, damp, in a fog, in a closed room, least exposure, touch, injury, jar, spinal concussion, shock, bruises, exertion, change of weather, motion.
Ameliorations or better from: lying on the face, bending backward and rubbing.

Remedy Relationships
Similar and Related Remedies: Arnica, Ledum, Rhus toxicodendron.
Antidotal: Arsenicum album, (remember the case described above) and Chamomilla.

Fright. Bites. Wounds. Shock. Mesmerism.

Conclusions and Discussion
In Clarke, he lists the following diseases and ailments (among others) for which Hypericum may be the curative remedy:
Asthma, affections of the breasts, bites, bruises, bunions, compound fractures, concussion of the brain, corns, coxalgia, diarrhea, gunshot wounds, hemorrhoids, headache, hydrophobia, hypersensitivity, impotence, effects of labor, meningitis, affections of the mind, neuralgia, effects of operations, panaritium, paralysis, rheumatism, scars, sciatica, spastic paralysis, spinal concussion, spinal irritation, stiff neck, tetanus, ulceration, whooping cough and wounds.

I don't know about you, but I'm not likely to take something this powerful on a daily basis unless I have a darn good and scientific reason to do so!

Hypericum can eliminate the symptoms presented here only if the totality of the symptoms matches those of the person in question. If the person does not have this general grouping of symptoms, and takes this remedy for an extended period of time, they can develop some of these symptoms, or others. In essence, they will be conducting a proving of the remedy. As always I am interested in information obtained from first hand experience taking remedies. My contact information is located on the left side of the Consulting Services Page.

Hypericum is a dyslexia remedy along with many others such as Stramonium, China, Dioscorea, Lycopodium. It is also a remedy with much confusion and mental mistakes and some delirium. The mental condition seems to be sluggish after waking and more animated as the day progresses with excitement and weeping in the evening and delirium during sleep. Forgets what he is about to say, like Baryta carb., Helleborus, Medorrhinum, Thuja and Cannabis indica and others.

The similarity to Thuja is highlighted when you consider that it has similar sensations of levitation as Hypericum. One of the modalities that expresses part of the essence of this remedy is the aggravation of the respiratory symptoms in foggy weather. The person seems to be in a fog mentally. They can become very spacey if they have been taking this remedy for a long time and appear to need remedies such as Cannabis indica, Medorrhinum, Thuja, Veratrum album and others. A person will eventually fully prove the remedy if they take it constantly, especially if they are taking potencies, especially the high ones. So you may get a person proving the remedy who needs to get off the remedy to get back to normal.

Or you could see someone who is in this state naturally who has had a lot of physical and perhaps emotional injuries and has the rest of the symptoms that go along with the complete symptom image of the remedy--and that person needs the remedy. But not every day, only infrequently, according to classical homeopathic indications. Consult with me if you have questions about whether Saint John's Wort is right for you or not. If you start to notice that you are feeling spaced-out, are making dyslexic mistakes and feel as if you are floating, flying or hovering in the air or experience any of the other symptoms listed above, then you may want to consult a Classical Homeopath to see if you are proving the remedy or not. As always, check with your primary healthcare provider before making any changes in your health regimen.
