Causticum

Background
Causticum is essentially Potassium hydroxide (KOH) which is prepared by combining slaked lime with sulfate of potash to produce a resultant mixture from which Causticum is extracted by distillation. The chemical reaction is

CaOH2
Calcium hydroxide
or Slaked Lime

+

K2SO4
Potassium
bisulphate

=

CaSO4
Calcium sulphate

+

KOH
Potassium hydroxide
or Causticum

Causticum prepared in the above way of Hahnemann is virtually pure in comparison to commercially produced KOH (which is produced by electrolysis of potassium chloride) and often contains chlorides along with amounts of other adulterants.

Potassium hydroxide is a potent base and disbands easily in water emitting a great deal of heat as well as forming a potently alkaline, acerbic liquid blend. Chemically it is similar to Sodium hydroxide and is used for the same purposes in bleaching, soap making and in the manufacture of chemicals. However because of its relative expensiveness its commercial application is less extensive.

Mentals

Individuals belonging to the Causticum type are basically of an extraordinary constitutional nature. They are somewhat exceptional and in the old Materia Medicas, their character has been portrayed only in a vague manner. As a result of this there can be an unclear perception regarding the mentality of the Causticum individual.

Causticum personalities cannot stand injustice and will defend themselves very actively and passionately against it. In many ways Causticum is the opposite of Staphisagria

Causticums are very sympathetic people often finding themselves in conflict with authorities. If they notice any form of injustice they will stand up against it. This need not only be in a family situation (Causticum characters are often the stronger ones within the family solving the big problems) but it can also extent to a global fight-for-the-better. In organizations like Greenpeace, Amnesty International or peace-movements you will find many Causticum characters. These people are over-anxious concerning the welfare of others, and they feel a strong need to reach a helping hand. Their aggression is very well developed, showing itself in a disposition to contradict, being sensitive and easily offended, fighting any form of authority and being quarrelsome. In their fanaticism to conquer injustice they can be dictatorial themselves.

It is not surprising that such sympathetic people feel a lot of grief. They take family relationships very seriously as a consequence of which they can develop ailments from cares, worries and the death of relatives or friends. Causticums can become mentally exhausted, burned out and easily weep. The nervous response on the mind to such care, grief, sorrow or hopelessness exerts a very depressing influence in keeping with melancholia similar to Ign, Nat-m and Phos-ac

Generals
In common with other Potassium salts there is great weakness/ a faint like weakness/ a sinking of strength accompanied with trembling. It shares this symptom with Gels along with eye lid ptosis.

There is also a marked emaciation and loss of condition as a result of long illness and suffering

Face
There are four symptoms

  •  Sickly yellow skin discolouration (not jaundice).
  •  Paralysis of the tongue
  •  Prosopalgia
  •  Stiffness of the jaw (rheumatic not lock jaw)

Throat

  • The throat is sore, tender, dry, raw and burning accompanied by trouble in swallowing. An annoying dry tickling dry cough is present resulting in an unpleasant tightness of the chest. These symptoms are relieved by cold water. Involuntary urination may accompany coughing.
  • Hoarseness, particularly associated with a deep bass voice due to paralysis of laryngeal muscles. A residual chronic hoarseness may remain long after the acute laryngitis stage. .

GI Tract

  • Abdominal bloating and burning
  • Constipation is present with frequent but unsuccessful desire for stool with much pain and straining resulting in redness of the face.
  • Haemorrhoids result from constipation which are swollen; itching; smarting; raw and sore, moist; stinging; burning; with aggravation when walking, when thinking of them, or from straining the voice.

Back & Extremeties

  • Painful stiffness of the neck, back and sacrum, especially on rising from a chair.Paralysis of either or both lower and upper extremities.
  • Dull drawing pain in hands and arms with weakness and trembling
  • Drawing and tearing in thighs and legs, knees and feet, worse in open air and better in bed
  • Rheumatic and arthritic inflammations with contractions of the flexors and stiffness of the joints. Nash states If I were to select the three remedies to for the treatment of chronic rheumatism and paralysis they would be Caust, Rhus-t, and Sul.

Muscle Weakness

  • Ptosis (of the upper eyelid),
  • Prosopalgia,
  • Tongue (defective speech)
  • Larynx, (hoarseness, loss of voice),
  • Bladder (enuresis, urinates when coughing & sneezing)

Muscle Paralysis

  • On other occasions the muscles (particularly those of the face and extremities) may be paralysed.
  • Polio practically when right sided.

Skin
Skin covered with large, jagged, easily bleeding warts (tips of fingers and nose); intertrigo.

Sleep

  • At night, unable to get an easy position or lie still a moment (Eup., Rhus).
  • Must move constantly, but motion does not relieve.
  • Cannot cover too warmly, but warmth does not amel

Etiology

  • From long - lasting grief and sorrow (Phos. ac.):
  • From loss of sleep, night watching (Coc., Ign.);
  • From sudden emotions, fear, fright, joy (Coff., Gels.);
  • From anger or vexation; from suppressed eruptions.

Sensations
1. There are general tearing neuralgic pains but especially in the facial region.

2. There is much Rawness & Soreness. This soreness differs from that of Arn which is more of a bruised feeling or that of Rhus-t which is more of an ache. The point of distinction is that the Caust sensation of soreness is confined mainly to mucus tissues (scalp, throat, respiratory tract, rectum, anus, urethra, vagina, uterus)..

3. There is a general sensation of Burning. This differs from the Sul burning which is itchy and the stinging burning of Apis.  In distinction the Causticum burning is associated with a sore rawness.

4. Drawing pains particularly of the extremities in the form of arthritis.

Modalities
Better in damp wet weather/ Worse in dry fine weather
(Nux-v asthma < in dry weather > in damp weather.)
