2. Source & History

The discovery of iodine, like most discoveries, was a fortuitous accident. In 1811 Napoleons army required huge amounts gunpowder which was running short due to a shortage of Saltpeter. Someone suggested using the ash from dried seaweed as a substitute. It worked and the French were once more back in the war business.
One day Bernard Courtois, a practicing chemist, accidentally added a bit too much acid in the Saltpeter manufacturing process and suddenly a violet vapor cloud appeared and condensed onto the colder parts of the equipment forming lustrous crystals. Thus Iodine was discovered. Later Jean Lugol discovered that bonding iodine to potassium made it water soluble thus permitting its use as an antiseptic. Still later a Swiss Dr Jean Franois Condet announced that iodine could reduce goiters and suddenly overnight iodine became fashionable and was consumed by people everywhere. The era of nutritional medicine (as opposed to germ medicine) was thus ushered in.

The Homeopathic remedy is made from tincture and has a yellow brown colour

3. Mentals & Generals

Constitutionally the patient is anxious, excited, has a flushed face with wide open staring eyes, is usually thin with enlarged lymph/ thyroid glands.

Mentals include restlessness, impatience, never still, must continually be active and do something, always in a hurry with a tendency to impulsiveness, apprehensive, preoccupied and with a pessimistic outlook.

Warm blooded with tremendous body heat output; requires a cool place to work in. Remains thin in spite of a good appetite. Heavy hot sweats are common.

Small amounts of Iod stimulate (low potencies) whilst large amounts (high potencies) depress activity. Thus the remedy's symptomology can be evidenced in two opposing ways (ie loss of appetite or voracious appetite - hyperactivity or hypoactivity - tissue atrophy or enlargement etc)

4. Particulars

Tissue affinities include gonads, adrenals and breast. Special affinity with the thyroid and goitre.

8. Constitutional Prescribing

The use of Iod is usually restricted to symptomatic situations. However the remedy's characteristics are mainly suggestive of Nebel's phosphoric constitution
although because of its opposing symptomology some constitutions may display more calcic characteristics. As always it is the patient picture that is important especially the mental & general manifestations which are the key determinants for its Constitutional use.
High potency Constitutional prescription may be used as background together with a concurrent lower potency symptomatic remedy administered according to the Law of Similars in situations where two or more of the main symptoms occur together in the patient. For example
Croup and Goitre
Emaciation with good appetite and Glandular indurations.

Tabular Materia Medica

Materia Medica (MM) is Latin for medical material. MMs are a listing of remedies together with their respective symptoms and differ from Repertories which are a listing of symptoms and illnesses.

This Tabular MM is not presented as an exhaustive comprehensive list of all that is known about a remedy. Rather the opposite. It is intended to be used only as an aid memoire to highlight the foundation upon which by further study and experience a fuller knowledge of homoeopathics can be obtained. Consider the Tabular MM as a word picture showing a black and white sketch of the remedys main essential characteristics upon which colour, shade and tone has still be painted.

Remember to rank case symptoms according to their hierarchy giving first priority to
Mentals & Generals when comparing the MM remedy picture of one remedy against another.

Further information on
The Hierarchy of Symptoms

may be had by clicking

Remember also that you don't need to match everything listed under a remedy to benefit from the remedy. All that is required is to find the closest remedy match for those case  symptoms which rank the highest and are the most troublesome. The easiest way to find remedy matches is by Repertorisation.

For more information on Repertorisation click

Once the main case symptoms have been captured in say 4 - 6  remedies fine tune the final remedy selection manually by refering to the MM, or clicking the Further Information tabs or looking up any other approriate reference manual.
