Difference between Anxiety and Fear
Homeopaths differentiate between Anxiety and Fear. These two emotions are often confused but a simple way of defining the difference is Anxiety is perceived whereas Fear is real.

Thus Anxiety is a mental and emotional response on account of an anticipatory danger which may or may not exist. It reveals itself as an awareness of heightened tensions and body tone, apprehension, disquiet, unease, all of which are felt to be a threat to the security of the individual. Typical examples are stage fright, a change of circumstances, disapproval, rejection, embarrassment, commitment, air flight, snakes, spiders etc etc.

Fear on the other hand is a mental and emotional response on account of a present and actual danger based upon previous experience, knowledge or trigger happening event

Background - Anxiety Phobia
Most of us have quite a few insignificant irrational anxieties like getting on an airplane, sight of a snake or spider, darkness, etc. However if these anxieties are so extreme that they intervene with your day-to-day living then the causation requires treatment without delay.

Phobia is a deep-seated, enduring, unreasonable anxiety of something causing resulting in an anxiety disorder, an explicable reaction to certain things, activity or situations that may possibly cause impairment or damage to mental and physical health. Those who suffer from phobias are not actually terrified of particular situations or places but of the feelings of trauma/shock they experience when in the situation. A phobia is not an illness by itself but when threatened by a perception of danger people can lose control of themselves producing panic attacks which result in severe physical or mental symptoms. Utimately Phobias can immensely affect ones life leading to an inability to function normally at home, work or in social settings.

Types of Phobias
There are innumerable types of phobias, but they are mostly grouped into three categories:

  •  Social Phobia: where a person feels insecure and fears association with people. In social settings, they feel ill at ease and anxious with the thought of getting embarrassed.
  • Specific Phobias: like Acrophobia (fears of heights), Hydrophobia (fear of water), Aviatophobia or Aerophobia (fear of flying), Achluophobia (fear of darkness), Claustrophobia (fear of closed places), Monophobia (fear of being alone), Arachnophobia (fear of spiders), Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), and many more.
  • Agoraphobia: fear of public places where the person fears leaving their secure and familiar environment such as their home or any other place, they consider safe. They stay away from crowded places such as shopping malls, movie theatres, most forms of travel like cars, subways, airplanes and they might feel unharmed only at their own home.
