What is a Stroke?
A stroke or "brain attack" occurs when blood circulation to the brain fails. As a result brain cells can die from a lack of oxygen. There are two reasons for a stroke:
1. Arterial blockage in the brain or neck
which is responsible for 80% of incidences.
These blackages are due to :
 i)  The formation of a clot (thrombosis).

 ii) The movement of a clot from
another part of the body to the neck (embolism).

 iii) The narrowing of an artery (stenosis).

2. Brain haemorrhage

in which blood seeps into the vascular cavities
due to a weakening of the arterial wall.

The Significance of Stroke in Ireland
Worldwide stroke is the second highest fatality condition. In Ireland u
p to 8,500 people suffer a stroke annually as a result which 2,500 patients die. This is about 10 times the annual death rate from traffic accidents.
Currently, there are over 30,000 people with residual disability with a further 20% unable to walk and 50% in need of day to day assistance.

Why Many Stroke Victims Die?
In three words the answer is
Lack of Awareness
If a stroke victim receives medical attention within 3 hours its effects can be reversed totally in 95% of the cases. The trick is getting stroke symptoms recognised sufficiently quickly to enable medically care within the 3 hour window.

How to Recognise a Stroke
Remember the acronym
FAST

F = Facial Weakness
Ask the victim to smile.
It will be lopsided due to facial paralysis.
The victim may drool.

A = Arm Weakness
The victim is unable to raise his arm or arms.

S = Speech Weakness
The victim has a loss of coherent articulation
Unable to repeat a simple sentence.

T = Tongue Weakness
The victim is unable to extend the tongue straight out. It will be lopsided.

Alternatively remember the acronym
STROKE
However I think this acronym is rather strained.
You choose.

S = Smile
Ask the victim to smile. It will be lopsided due to facial paralysis.
The victim may drool.

T = Tongue
Unable to extend the tongue straight out. It will be lopsided.

R = Raise the Arms
The victim is unable to raise his arm or arms

O = Oration Difficult
Loss of coherent articulation
Unable to repeat a simple sentence.

K = Confused Comprehension
Signs of disorientation and confused understanding
Declares himself OK when he is obviously not.

E = Eyes & Head
Eyes wide and staring with difficulty reading due to blurred
vision.
Sudden dramatic headache for no apparent reason.

Action to Take

1. Dial 999 (ask for Ambulance)
If  the victim has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks,
call the emergency number
 immediately

2. Homeopathic Treatment
Give one or more of the following remedies
every 10 minutes for up to ten doses
while waiting for medical assistance
or until symptoms abate

2a. If Panicking
For a panicky victim who is afraid of dying when they realise what is happening
Acon 1M

2b. General Support
For a victim where main symptoms are a
feeling of paralysis with numbness and trembling,
difficulty in speech, pain at back of head.
Gel 6C
General background remedy for
reduction of trauma throughout the body

Arn 1M

2c. If Collapsed or Unconscious
For a victim with an overwhelming desire to sleep
or is lapsing into unconsciousness,
delirious, bursting headache,
face dark suffused hot, eyes contracted,
painless paralysis of extremities, face and tongue,
respiration difficult to detect or stopped, pulse slow but full.
Op 6C

3. How to Avoid Reoccurrence
Avoiding the recurrence of a stroke involves the avoidance of risk factors
some of which are mentioned above.
Here are some Homeopathic remedies to reduce risk.

3a. High Blood Pressure
(from Emotional Tension )

Kali-p 200C

six nightly doses or
Kali-p 6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths

3b. High Blood Pressure
(from Arteriosclerosis )
Bar-m 6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths.

3c. Blood Clots
Calc-s 6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths.

3d. Embolism
(Artrial Fibrillation)
Crat
6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths

3e. High Cholesterol
Chol 6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths

3f. Carotid Stenosis
Calc-f 6X
twice daily for 3-6 mths

What are the risk factors for stroke?
Overall, the most common risk factors for stroke are:
# High blood pressure

# High cholesterol

# Smoking

 # Alcohol

# Drug addiction

# Diabetes

# Obesity and
increasing age
.

Do You Know Your Stroke Risk?
If you are over 55 years old, the worksheet below can help you estimate your risk of stroke and
show the benefit of risk-factor control.
The worksheet was developed from NINDS-supported work in the well-known Framingham Study.
