Eye Health (1)

The Significance
Eyes are the doorway to ones soul! Eyes reflect the mind, eyes reflect psyche, and eyes reflect HEALTH! No wonder homeopathy that caters effectively the mind of an individual has lot to offer in problems of eyes.

What does one see in a person at first? Obviously the eyes! Also in conversation eye contact is very important. Little wonder eyes high priority when it comes to personal well-being. No one likes haggard, dull-looking eyes that reflect internal ill-health. Rather they should reflect ones inner content and ones outward enjoyment of lifes colours.

The eye is certainly one of the most delicate organs of the body and therefore caring for them has to be done with tender loving care.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant
Antioxidant donating an electron to a free radical.

Background
As a by-product of normal metabolism every cell in our body produces on a daily basis tens of thousands of free radicals. The oxidation that inevitably results can from a long-term perspective have a devastating effect on the integrity of our cellular health. Natural antioxidants are the bodys most powerful weapons against the ravages of free radical oxidation. Controlling the effects of oxidation results in greater amounts of energy, increased stamina and a better state of overall health.

The Body's Antioxidants
In order to protect itself from the rigors of oxidation Mother Nature provides thousands of different antioxidants in varied amounts in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. It is these antioxidants that the body uses as its defence mechanism from oxidative damage.

Normally the body can handle free radicals but if antioxidants are unavailable or if free-radical production becomes excessive damage can occur. A free radical is an unstable molecule that has a single unpaired electron in its outer shell. The molecule goes around searching (or stealing) any electron it can find in order to stabilise itself. Antioxidants stabilise free radicals by donating one of their own electrons thereby ending the electron "stealing" cycle. The antioxidant itself doesnt become instable by losing an electron because it is naturally stable in either form Their action is one of scavengers helping to prevent cell and tissue damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease.

The big three body antioxidants are:

1. Vitamin E The most abundant fat-soluble antioxidant in the body is a primary defender against lipid (fat) peroxidation.

2. Vitamin C

2. Vitamin C  The most abundant water-soluble antioxidant in the body acts primarily in inter cellular fluid and is of particular note in combating free-radical formation caused by environmental pollution and cigarette smoke.

3. Superoxide dismutase (SOD)

3. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that catalyses the dismutation of superoxides into its components of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. It was discovered by Irwin Fridovich and his graduate student Joe McCord who  made the landmark discovery of the SOD enzyme in 1968 establishing that the body produces its own antioxidants. They developed the "superoxide theory of oxygen toxicity,"which stated that the superoxide radical inflicts major damage to the body, and SOD, whose primary purpose is to eliminate the destructive radical, is the body's first line of defense. It is the main antioxidant the body employs for the maintenance of cellular integrity. Its uniqueness is that it contains three spare electrons all of which can be used to dismutate and stabilize free radicals. It has been observed that SOD is 3500 times more effective than Vitamin C in warding off the rigours of free radical damage.

Some of the other factors which have been linked with free radical damage include smoking, pollution, drugs, UV light and pesticides.

Several different forms of the SOD enzyme exist but they are all proteins cofactored with either copper, zinc or manganese. Thus there are three major families of SOD depending on the metal cofactor:

Knowing SOD's crucial role in reducing oxidative stress dietitions have been looking for ways to boost its levels through diet. Dietary sources of SOD are melons, casaba, cantaloupe wheat, corn and soy sprouts all of which have good concentrations of SOD. However stomach acids and digestive enzymes easily destroy the SOD molecule leaving very little available to enter the bloodstream.  Thus the possibility of an adequate dietary supply of SOD is problematic.

Age Related Degeneration
(ARD)

Age related Degeneration (ARD)
Age Related Degeneration (ARD)

Of particular importance is the fact that free radical damage accumulates with age. This is what is meant by the term Age Related Degeneration (ARD) where its prevalence, incidence, progression and associated features increase with age. One study showed that the prevalence of ARD was less than 10% in persons aged 43 to 54 years but tripled for persons aged up to 75 and rose to 46.2% for persons aged 75 years and older.

Strictly speaking ARD is only concerned with free radicals damage to cellular functionality in which the destruction of molecules results in loss of cellular efficiency, functionality, retardation and eventually death. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes.

It has already been noted that the bodys main weapon against cellular oxidation is the antioxidant enzyme SOD and consequently the maintenance of optimal levels is of prime importance in the bodys fight against ARD.

Mention has already been made of the limitations of supplying an adequate level from dietary sources and consequently the strengthening and reinforcing the body's natural levels of SOD through supplementation becomes a necessity particularly for the over 50s.

The Amsler Grid
Home test for ARD

Cover one eye and stare at a black dot in the center of the Amsler grid.below.

Amsler Grid (normal)

While staring at the dot, you may notice that the straight lines in the pattern appear wavy. You may notice that some of the lines are missing. These may be signs of AMD.

Amsler Grid (ARD)

You should get an Amsler grid from your eye care professional.and use it every day to evaluate your vision for signs of wet AMD.

Homeopathics

Previous mention has been made of the three different forms of SOD depending upon which of the three metals (Copper, Manganese or Zinc) it was cofactored with. It has also been shown that Homeopathically potentised copper, manganese and zinc can support the efficiency of SOD. All three metals take part in the molecule of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase from where one can infer their relevant importance in the endogenous mechanism of oxidative stress control and lipid peroxidation.

Copper is a transition metal that can be found in every tissue with the largest concentrations in the brain and liver. It integrates the SOD in cytochrome oxidize, in tyrosinase and in teta hydroxilase dopamine

The manganese is a transition metal and found in the molecule of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase from where one can infer its relevant importance in the endogenous mechanism of oxidative stress control and lipidic peroxidation

The zinc is a transition metal that performs in numerous organic functions, being one of the main metals for the brain. It takes part in insulin formation as well as and acts in the performance of almost a hundred enzymes controlling and activating a large quantity of hormones.
